Five votes cast in student senate runoff
date Monday, May 8, 1972
location LA campus
In a runoff election for the position of sophomore representative in the student senate, a grand total of five votes were cast. The winner won by a margin of four votes to one (either a landslide or a razor-thin margin, depending on your perspective). A third candidate evidently chose not to vote for himself, receiving zero votes.
A Graphic editorial on the matter opined, "The credibility of the democratic process once again stretched almost to the point of breaking." Editors wondered whether the lack of interest was indicative of a general decline in enthusiasm at the Los Angeles campus ahead of the opening of the new college at Malibu.1
